4.0 out of 5 stars Very fine production - recommended, 19 July 2010

This is the second radio dramatization of Tinker, Tailor -- the first one appeared in 1989, with Bernard Hepton as Smiley.

This recording from 2010 is also three-hour performance, though in this case BBC has been kind enough to keep closer the original radio format, with announcements and credits at the beginning and end of each CD.

It is without question a very good performance. I can't fault Simon Russell Beale as Smiley in any important respect, not would I wish to. My personal highlights are: Ann Smiley (played by Anna Chancellor) who gets a reasonably prominent place as a voice in Smiley's head, where she undoubtedly belongs; Bill Haydon (played by Michael Feast), who gets a slight dash of snobbery, which I think suits the role; and Maggie Steed as Connie Sachs.

It's fairly close to the book -- in some places, I could swear they are reading straight from the pages, as I recognize familiar passages. And I have now listened to it three times, and I... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this!, 22 Mar 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme ( What's this?)
Having struggled with le Carre's books in the past, I wasn't sure whether I would really enjoy this ... I just picked it as something that might entertain me during longish car journeys. The other day, I had to drive to Cambridge for a course and, before I knew it, found myself totally engrosed in the story! This recording brought the plot to life for me in a way that even the television series had failed to do! The characters came alive, and the plot followed through fantastically, gripping me from beginning to end! I am officially hooked!

I shall definitely be ordering more in this series, and look forwards to many more happy hours spent in the car travelling around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Adaptation, 26 Jan 2010
This review is from: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (BBC Audio) (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of the Smiley novels for some time and (unbelievably) didn't realise that they'd all been dramatised and were being broadcast.

Luckily, I managed to get on board with this, the first of the Karla Trilogy.

I've read the book a number of times but found that there were places where this adaptation actually made some points in the book clearer than before. For example, the fact that Karla knew about Jim's briefing by Control. I was disappointed that Jerry Westerby's interview with Smiley wasn't included as this gives a good lead in to the Honourable Schoolboy (though it doesn't detract from the plot of this story).

Simon Russell Beale is superb as Smiley. Occasionally there are echoes of Guiness - however I think this is more due to the nature of the part than any attempt at impersonation (le Carre himself said that Guiness was perfect as Smiley, so anyone else playing him should bear some similarity).

I also liked the mental... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy work, 20 Dec 2010

I had a paint gun before but it had the pump built into the gun and was therfore heavy to use, noisy, and needed refilling often, when that broke I purchased this gun. I am so glad I did. I have 30 panels to paint in my garden and only needed to refill the back pack 3 times. The machine is powerful and you do have to be carefull with overspray in the breeze as the gun does create alot of mist. The gun if used with the back pack is really light as a hose runs from the gun head to the large canister so no more aching arm and cleaning is simple also. Highly reccomend this for easy fence painting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Job well done, 9 Oct 2010
This review is from: Earlex Paint Spray Station 3900 (DIY & Tools)
Apart from the unfortunate packaging and the fact that it had to be returned damaged, the replacement arrived in very good time. The DVD which accompanies it is brilliant. Despite the statement on the tin of the exterior emulsion paint that it had to be brushed or rollered, we had a large expanse to cover and decided to use the sprayer. Dilution was a long process as the exterior paint is very thick and the sprayer's literature did not recommend use of the larger container, which meant frequent refilling of the smaller one. The result was excellent and only required a small amount of brushwork. The nozzle positions are easy to change. Cleaning is a bit messy but effective and quickly mastered. Thoroughly effective and versatile and perfect for interior large areas.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear - same old leaks, 1 April 2011

This review is from: Earlex Paint Spray Station 3900 (DIY & Tools)
I previously had an Earlex 3000 which I used to spray my fence panels. I have a lot of fence - like a lot. The paint container on the 3000 required filling up every few minutes and leaked preservative badly, so I thought the backpack on the 3900 would be great improvement. Shows how wrong you can be!

When this device works it is very good and spraying a panel takes say 1 minute. However, the back pack is a major problem as it too leaks preservative around the lid (unsurprising as it has a similar lid to the 3000) so unless you want preseravtive running down your back, it has to stood on the ground. Which rather defeats the objective.

The second problem is the pipes to the backpack which are a push fit onto the container and come off from time to time. These two problems combine to make a basically good product (for spraying preservative) into a real disappointment.

I've emailed Earlex on these points. No reply. Strange, they responded quickly enough... Read more
